Migration Patterns
People have been living in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago for more than 4000 years. The Inuit that live in Iqaluit today descended from the Thule culture. They settled in Iqaluit around 1000 years ago. They trapped, hunted and fished for clothing and food - which the Inuit still do today. The Thule lived in igloos, semi subterranean houses and animal skin tents.
There isn't much inter-provincial migration. Many people migrate to Iqaluit since it is the capital city. Most of the population (about 85%) of Iqaluit is Inuit. The rest are almost all European. The four main languages spoken in Iqaluit are Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, English and French.

The main religions in Nunavut are Catholicism, Anglicanism and Pentecostalism. There are also other religions like Protestant, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist, though many people do not believe in a religion.
In the future, hopefully there will be more migration to Iqaluit. There are possibilities of mining, so that would bring many workers into Nunavut. More people are leaving the territory than migrating in. From 1996-2006, 4940 people moved to Nunavut from other parts of Canada, while 5615 people moved from Nunavut to other parts of Canada. This is bad because the population is slowly decreasing. If there is to be development, either more people have to migrate in, or the birth rate has to increase.
